Fairfax Co. Schools Employee Arrested On Embezzlement Charge: Police

A Fairfax County Public Schools basketball coach has been charged with embezzling money from a school event, according to police.

Drew Smerzinski, 33, of Herndon, a basketball coach with Fairfax County Public Schools, was charged with felony embezzlement on Wednesday and turned himself into police on Thursday, police said.

HERNDON, VA — A Fairfax County Public Schools employee has been charged with embezzling money from a school event, according to police.

Drew Smerzinski, 33, of Herndon, a basketball coach in the county school system, was charged with felony embezzlement on Wednesday and turned himself into police on Thursday, the Fairfax County Police Department said Friday. He was released on an unsecured bond.

Fairfax County Public School suspended him from his coaching position following the arrest, police said.

In July, detectives from the police department’s Special Investigations Unit began its investigation after receiving information from the FCPS human resources department of potential misappropriation of funds by an employee.

After conducting interviews and gathering evidence, detectives obtain a warrant for Smerzinski’s arrest on Wednesday, according to the FCPD.
