Green Lizard Announces 1st Annual Bike-a-Thon, Last Chance for Fire Academy Sign-Ups, and More

As you may have heard, the Herndon High marching band has been invited to perform in Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor Parade, coming up in just a few months in December. Naturally, the trip will be an expensive one, so many fundraisers are being organized to help the band. Green Lizard Cycling in downtown has just announced its 1st Annual Green Lizard Half-Century Fun Ride Bike-A-Thon, to take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, with proceeds from the ride supporting the band’s trip. The ride will start and finish at Green Lizard Cycling downtown and will follow the Washington & Old Dominion Trail from Herndon to Purcellville.  Riders may also choose an abbreviated 25-mile run which will turn around in Leesburg on the same W&OD Trail.  The run will be supported with rest stops, water, bike mechanics and medical assistance if necessary. It was announced Monday that a new emergency room at StoneSpring Emergency Center in Reston will officially open to the public on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 a.m. According to a news release, it will be “a full-service, state-of-the-art ER for all major and minor emergency needs.” Located at the intersection of Gum Spring Road and Route 50, just across from the South Riding and Stone Ridge communities, the 9,600-square-foot ER will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by physicians and clinical staff “with special training in pediatric and adult emergency medicine,” the statement indicated. Services at the facility will include an on-site, full-service lab with point-of-care testing, a full range of imaging such as x-ray, CT and ultrasound, and “expedited transfers for patients who need inpatient or specialty care at Reston Hospital Center.” For more information, visit www.stonespringmedical.com.

There are just a few days left to sign up to participate in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department's Citizens Fire and Rescue Academy. Organizers say it’s an interesting, fun-filled, nine-week program that will show you what firefighters and paramedics do every day. Applications will be accepted through this Friday, Aug. 23, or until the class of 25 is filled. The Academy will begin Sept. 19 and will meet for nine consecutive weeks, from 6 -9 p.m. at various locations in and outside the Fire and Rescue Department. Each session will cover different aspects of the organization, providing an in-depth overview of the department and its uniformed and civilian workforce. Program topics include fire suppression, emergency medical services, training, recruitment, special operations and more.
