HERNDON, VA — Local and state officials participated in a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning for the Van Buren "Complete Street" and Herndon Parkway Intersection projects, which are expected to be completed in spring 2023.

First envisioned in 2015, the intersection project will provide enhancements to the primary roads in Herndon in anticipation of the opening of the Herndon stop on Metrorail’s Silver Line this summer.

The total construction cost for the projects is $10.9 million, with the Herndon Parkway intersection accounting for $4.5 million and the Van Buren Street portion totaling $6.4 million.

A total of $8 million, or 73 percent of the project, is funded through federal, regional and local grants secured by the town of Herndon. The remaining cost will be paid by Herndon taxpayers.

The project improvements include the addition of curb and gutter; widening of travel lanes to 11 feet; on- and off-road bike lanes in each direction; addition of five-foot wide sidewalks with streetlights; addition of crosswalks and traffic signalization at Alabama Drive; added turn lane for north-bound Van Buren Street, at Herndon Parkway; improved pedestrian crosswalks with ADA pedestrian signals at Herndon Parkway; improved storm water management facilities; and the relocation of overhead utility lines.

A&M Concrete Corporation was selected as the contractor for the project.

The Van Buren Complete Street project will provide enhancement to Van Buren Street, from Old Spring Street to Herndon Parkway.

The Herndon Parkway/Van Buren Intersection project will focus on "providing significant transportation improvements in order to relieve congestion and improve safety at the Herndon Parkway intersection with South Van Buren Street," the project description explains.

The intersection connects two major roads that "provide linkage to Fairfax County and access to redevelopment areas of the Herndon Transit Oriented Core as well as the future Herndon Metrorail station," the town said.
