An excessive heat warning is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday in Herndon and across Northern Virginia.

The heat index, or "feels like" temperature, is expected to reach or exceed 110 degrees on Saturday in parts of the region, according to the weather service.

Herndon's heat index will reach 110 degrees by 4 p.m., with the temperature at 100 degrees for most of the afternoon.

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures is possible. People in the area should prepare for extreme temperatures.

Heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses are expected, according to the weather service.
