Most Expensive Cities to Get a Speeding Ticket in Virginia

Virginia commuters who receive speeding tickets can face costs up to 2.5 times the original cost of a ticket depending on location.

Virginia drivers who receive speeding tickets could end up paying nearly 2.5 times the original cost of the ticket after factoring in processing fees, insurance premiums and even the city where the infraction occurs.

Finance and Investing website Nerd Wallet calculated the true cost of a speeding ticket based on the three least expensive insurance rate quotes per jurisdiction for Virginia drivers.

The average speeder will have to pay $6 for each mile over the speed limit or $7 in school zones. Add that to court costs and the total fine for driving 15 miles per hour over the speed limit jumps to $141.

Those convicted of speeding in Virginia normally see insurance costs increase by an average of $64.95 per year for three years. According to Nerd Wallet, the true cost of a speeding ticket in Virginia is 2.38 times the cost of the actual ticket, or $335.84 on average for a $141 speeding ticket.

Car insurance costs for those convicted of speeding can vary by city due to the different rates drivers pay from city to city. Richmond drivers might see an annual increase of $81.85 whereas Christianburg drivers would have to pay $52.33 more per year. On average, Virginians face a 7.37 percent increase in insurance costs after a speeding ticket.
