Orange, Silver Lines to Bypass Stadium-Armory During Peak Hours: Metro Confirms

This measure, which takes effect Tuesday, is the result of a transformer fire at the Stadium-Armory station last week that has caused delays

Metro is continuing to take measures to reduce congestion at its Stadium-Armory station in the wake of a transformer fire that occurred at that station last week.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Stadium-Armory station will be served by Blue Line trains only during weekday rush hours, Metro announced in a news release over the weekend.

During those hours — between opening and 10 a.m. as well as between 2-7:30 p.m. — all Orange and Silver Line trains will pass through the Stadium-Armory station without stopping.

The transformer fire has reduced the station’s electrical capacity, causing slower loading and unloading times that created backups at the station among the Blue, Orange and Silver lines.

Last week, Metro tried to schedule Orange and Silver Line trains to arrive every eight minutes instead of every six minutes, but this new measure is expected to better reduce congestion.

To accommodate any riders who travel between Stadium-Armory and Orange Line stations east of Stadium-Armory (e.g. Minnesota Avenue- New Carrollton), Metro is offering free shuttle buses between Stadium-Armory and Minnesota Avenue during the hours Stadium-Armory is bypassed.
