Correction: Admission to the show is $12.

The 17th annual Showcase of Bands returns to Herndon High this weekend - and the Pride of Herndon hopes many from the community will come out and cheer on all of the groups slated to perform this year.

The showcase features high school marching bands from throughout the region, presenting their field shows, in which the bands march and make formations on the field while playing music. Each band competes with other bands of similar size in different categories.

Judges rate and score each band, and the top bands are recognized with trophies at the awards ceremonies.

The Pride of Herndon will present its 2013 field show by exhibition.

"This is our 17th annual Showcase of Bands. We are proud to host one of the longest running competitions in Virginia, and excited for our community to see the best of what all of our area students have to offer," said Band Director Kathleen Jacoby.

Jacoby said the Pride of Herndon's show this year is entitled “Star-Crossed,” and features music from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.

The Showcase of Bands is hosted in partnership by the Herndon High Band Parents Association and U.S. Bands.

The event kicks off with a performance of the National Anthem at 10:40, and concludes with the awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
