$3.9M In Federal Funding Awarded To Leesburg Executive Airport For Apron Construction

LEESBURG, VA — The Leesburg Executive Airport was awarded millions of dollars in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The funding was announced by Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner in a joint news release on Monday, Sept. 21.

The funds awarded to the Leesburg Executive Airport will total $3,990,000. The money will be used to construct an apron at the north end of the airport to provide parking for airport users.

These funds will not require the typical 10 percent local match in funding, due to the American Rescue Plan.

"Investment in our Commonwealth’s infrastructure makes life easier for every Virginian," Senators Kaine and Warner said in a joint news release on Monday. "We are excited to see this funding go towards making improvements to our airports as travel restrictions begin to ease following the COVID-19 pandemic."

When completed, the airport's new apron will span about 20,000 square feet, according to the grant award.

The airport, which is owned and operated by the Town of Leesburg, is the second busiest general aviation facility in Virginia, according to their website. A 2016 economic impact study from the Virginia Department of Aviation ranked the Leesburg Executive Airport with the third highest economic impact among general aviation facilities.

The study estimated that the Leesburg Executive Airport contributed $121 million in economic activity, and created 586 jobs with a combined annual pay of $56 million.
