Cpl. Wilbur Jack Myers, 102-year-old Veteran Honored by the Sons of the American Revolution
Bronze Star Recipient Honored for His WW2 Service
During the Martinsburg, WV Veteran’s Day parade, Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter President, Barry Schwoerer, presents Cpl. Wilbur Jack Myers of Company B, 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, 104th and 42nd Infantry Division, with a SAR Military Service certificate, a Military Service challenge coin and a patriotic themed quilt, sewn by his Daughters of the American Revolution wife, Paula Schwoerer.
Cpl. Myers was a U.S. Army Corporal, in World War II. He was a gunner in the 1st platoon, Company B, 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. Cpl. Myers landed in France in September 1944. He was transferred to the Netherlands and supported the 104th Division and British forces in the Battle of Antwerp. Cpl. Myers also saw combat in the Ardennes region as part of the Battle of the Bulge. In 1945, the 692nd crossed the Rhine River and advanced across Germany, arriving in Munich in April. Cpl. Myers’ unit was also involved in the liberation of Dachau concentration camp. Cpl. Myers service represents one of both personal courage and proudly represents the broader legacy of the “Greatest Generation”.
The Sgt. Maj. John Champe chapter honored all veterans during the Martinsburg Veterans Day parade with a Revolutionary War themed float highlighting the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Colonial Navy and Colonial Marines. The SMJC float entry was attended by Compatriot Warner Workman and Chapter President Barry Schwoerer.
