Fairfax Resolves and a Signer of the Resolves Commemorated at two ceremonies
Local SAR Chapter participated in the Commemoration of the signing of Fairfax Resolves and the Patriot Grave marking of signer Henry Gunnell
On Saturday, July 19 the Fairfax Resolves Chapter Virginia SAR sponsored the Patriot Grave Marking of Henry Gunnell at his former plantation, Lahey Lost Valley Home in Vienna, VA. The Loudoun County based Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter participated in Honor Guard and by presenting the chapter wreath honoring Patriot Gunnell. Chapter President Barry Schwoerer and member Steve Van Deusen both wore militia attire. Patriot Gunnell was a signer of Fairfax Resolves, the first Virginia County written protest against the Intolerable Acts. One of the acts closed the port of Boston. The Intolerable Acts were a major factor triggering the Colonies to unite and declare Independence.Fairfax Resolves were written by George Mason. The committee responsible for drafting the Resolves was chaired by George Washington. By signing the resolves men put their fortunes and lives at risk.
Following the marking of Patriot Henry Gunnell, the commemoration moved to historic Pohick Church for the 251st Anniversary commemoration of the signing of Fairfax Resolves. Pohick Church was the home church of George Washingon and George Mason The Resolves were signed on July 18, 1774. Several other signers are buried in the church cemetery.
In attendance was Michael Elston, Esq., President General of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution and a member of Virginia SAR.
