Leesburg Restaurant Inspections: Fruit Fly Infestation

Several restaurants around the Leesburg area recorded violations during the most recent round of health department inspections.

LEESBURG, VA — Several restaurants around Leesburg and western Loudoun County recorded violations during recent inspections from the health department. Inspectors conducted the most recent restaurant visits between Oct. 25 and Oct. 31.

COVID-19 restrictions around the state have disappeared, so health inspectors have returned to conduct most restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • 900° Brick Oven Pizza, 609 E Main St, Unit A Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Oct. 25
    • Total violations: 4
      • Observed no paper towels in paper towel dispenser at hand washing sink closest to cook line. Ensure hand washing sinks are supplied at all times.
      • Observed slicer in need of cleaning. Ensure food contact surfaces are cleaned at proper frequency.
      • Observed milk (46F) and half & half (44F) cold holding at improper temperature in refrigeration unit by the register. Cold hold time/temperature control for safety foods at 41F or below.
      • Observed various portions of sliced meats in need of disposition. Several sliced meats were prepared on 10/15 and 10/16. Foods have exceeded the 7-day shelf life with day 1 counting as the date the foods were prepared.
  • Woodgrove High School, 36811 Allder School Rd Purcellville, VA 20132
    • Date inspected: Oct. 25
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed yogurt cups (45F, 46F) and cooked chicken (44F, 46F, 52F) cold holding at improper temperature in cold well on the service line. Cold hold time/temperature control for safety foods at 41F or below.
  • Red Horse Tavern, 112 W Washington St. Middleburg, VA 20118
    • Date inspected: Oct. 25
    • Total violations: 3
      • Bar sink is blocked with a slotted tray and kitchen sink is blocked with plastic serving trays. Remove items that are blocking sink. Do not use bar sink as a dump sink. Maintain handsinks accessible for employees to wash hands while handling food.
      • TCS food Items (chili, beans, rice) in refrigerator do not have date marks to indicate when they are to be used by or discarded. Date mark the container of ready-to-eat (RTE), time/temperature control for safety (TCS) food prepared and held for more than 24 hours in the food establishment to indicate the day or date by which the food shall be served or sold. The RTE TCS food may be held for a maximum of 7 days with the day of preparation counted as day 1.
      • There were no test strips to check the concentration of sanitizer (quaternary ammonia) in the 3 compartment sink. Obtain said test strips.

    • Date inspected: Oct. 26
    • Total violations: 1
      • A container of medicine for a food service worker is stored on top of a cabinet used to store clean wares. Corrected on site - the Person in Charge spoke to the employee and they relocated the container of medicine. Instruct employees store medicines in a location that will prevent the contamination of food and clean items.
  • Weird Brothers Coffee Bar, 1601 Village Market Blvd SE #122 Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Oct. 26
    • Total violations: 5
      • No soap available at the handwash sink located in back prep area. All handwash sinks are required to be supplied with soap for a proper handwash.
      • Splashes from handwashing may be contaminating clean measuring cups stored directly next to the front counter handwash sink. Observed slicer on bottom shelf with food debris build-up. Food contact surfaces are required to be clean to sigh and touch.
      • Egg patties were observed cooling on the counter with an internal temperature of 118F for approximately 1 hour. Cooked eggs are required to be cooled to 70F within 2 hours and within a total of six hours to 41F to prevent the growth of bacteria.
      • Observed the following time temperature control for safety (TCS) foods cold holding inside the reach in cooler since overnight (internal temperatures): whipped butter containers 57F, packages of cream cheese 56F, 17 cartons of liquid pasteurized eggs 55F, cooked sausage 57F, approximately 50 packages of chicken bites 55F, three bags of yogurt 55F. TCS foods are required to be cold held at 41F or below to prevent the growth of potentially hazardous foods.
      • Fruit fly infestation near the front handwash sink area. Trapping devices are in use; however, the fruit flies have migrated to the customer seating areas. Insects are required to be controlled to minimize their presence in a facility.
  • Tammy's Diner, 2 Loudoun St East/P.O. 345 Round Hill, VA 20141
    • Date inspected: Oct. 26
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed this facility to not have a Certified Food Protection Manager. At least one employee with supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and service must be a certified food protection manager who has demonstrated proficiency of required knowledge and information by passing a test that is part of an accredited program as specified in 12VAC5-421-65.
  • Twinleaf Catering (2), 1602 Village Market Blvd Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Oct. 26
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed mini burger patties 106F cooling on speed rack out of temperature control. Once foods are at 135F they are in the cooling process and moved to cooler that can cooled within two hours, from 135°F to 70°F and within a total of six hours from 135°F to 41°F or less.

    • Date inspected: Oct. 27
    • Total violations: 2
      • Observed no verifiable form, that employees are aware, to report to the person in charge, information about their health and activates as it relates to diseases that are transmitted through food.
      • Observed rice (prepared on 10/17), baked beans (prepared on 10/3), and marinara (prepared on 10/17) in need of disposition. Foods have exceeded the 7-day shelf life, with day 1 counting as the date the foods were prepared.

    • Date inspected: Oct. 27
    • Total violations: 1
      • Prep table ambient temperature is 58F. This unit is not opeerating properly. Maintain this unit to maintain TCS food at 41F. Use ice to maintain temperature at 41F. Person in charge stated that the unit is getting serviced in the evening today. Follow up required.

    • Total violations: 4
      • There is no available Chlorine sanitizer in bar dish machine. Sanitizer is reading 0 parts per million. Maintain 50-100 parts per million in a dish machine using Chlorine sanitizer for proper sanitization.
      • Ready to eat time/temperature control for safety (TCS) foods held over 24 hours are being kept past their consume by dates labeled on the containers. These foods are as follows: pico, and sliced tomato.
      • The kitchen floors are not cleaned as often as necessary to keep them clean.
      • Light bulb(s) are not covered kitchen by the walk-in freezer by a protective shielding.
