Local SAR Chapter at Historical Marker Dedication in Frederick, MD
A Marker commemorating the 1781 encampment of General Anthony Wayne's Army as it marched south to join Lafayette was dedicated 6 DEC 2025
A Revolutionary War Historic Marker was dedicated December 6, 2025 in a ceremony beside the Monocacy River at Riverside Park in Frederick, MD. The marker commemorates the encampment of General Anthony Wayne's Army as they marched south to join forces with General Lafayette.
The Ceremony was sponsored by the Sgt Lawrence Everhart Chapter Maryland Society, Sons of the American Revolution and was organized in partnership with the Frederick County U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission.
General Wayne and his troops left York, Pennsylvania on May 26, 1781, and passed through Frederick County, MD on their way to reinforce the troops under Lafayette's command in Virginia who were attempting to hold back a much larger British invasion force commanded by General Cornwallis. When Wayne combined forces with Lafayette, it changed the course of the war in Virginia. Cornwallis turned back toward the seaboard, resulting in the American-French victory at Yorktown and Independence for the United States of America.

A program to place commemorative signs at each camp site is managed by a team from SAR Chapters in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. The first sign in Virginia was dedicated on June 1, 2025 at Lucketts Community Park. The Ceremony to dedicate the sign was coordinated by the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter based in Loudoun County, VA. Two additional signs are planned for Loudoun County. One sign will be just north of Leesburg where the Army camped "Near the Chapel above Goose Creek" and the second near the intersection of Evergreen Mills Road and Goose Creek bridge at the former site of "Cox's Mill".
