Local SAR Chapter Supported Chicago Honor Flight of Veterans
Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter participated in an Honor Guard welcoming 117 Veterans arriving at Dulles International Airport from Chicago
On Wednesday, August 23 an honor guard comprised of three Northern Virginia Chapters, Sons of the American Revolution, honored 117 veterans who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The Veterans arrived on an Honor Flight from the Chicago area. Representing the Colonel James Wood II Chapter were Paul Christensen (President) and Chip Daniels (Past President). Representing the Fairfax Resolves Chapter was Jim Cordes. Representing the Sgt Maj John Champ Chapter.
There were 113 veterans of the Vietnam War and 4 veterans of the Korean War. The absence of veterans from WWII and few veterans of Korea reflect the fact veterans from those wars are aged and not many survive. All military services were represented. Thirty-one veterans had been awarded medals for bravery or valor in battle, over 1/4 of all veterans represented on this flight.
Other Honor Guards included: TSA, and a combined Honor Guard with representatives from police departments in Prince William County, Fairfax County and Loudoun County.
