Local SAR Participated in the Commemoration of Battle of Cricket Hill aka Gwynn's Island
The Battle of Cricket Hill or Gwynn's Island resulted in Royal Governor Dunmore departing Virginia for good.
Saturday, July 12 2025 at Morningstar Marina, Hudgins, VA. The Richard Henry Lee Chapter Virginia Society SAR sponsored the 249th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Cricket Hill, aka as the Battle of Gwynn's Island. The battle was Virginia Royal Governor Dunmore's Last Stand in Virginia. The memorial marker describes events best:
"These earthworks remain from the Battle of Cricket Hill, conducted from July 9-10, 1776, which ended British rule in Virginia. From this location, Virginia troops led by General Andrew Lewis bombarded the forces of Lord Dunmore, the last royal governor, who had established a base of Gwynn's Island. With the ensuing damage to his fleet and fortifications, Dunmore was forced to abandon the island and soon fled to New York never to return. With this threat removed, Virginia sent its troops north to join Washington's Continental Army."
Virginia moved quickly to establish a Government with a constitution which established the Commonwealth of Virginia complete with a Judiciary, Governor and legislature.
