LTEs: LaRock Visit to May Campaign Was Intrusion

Readers explain their side of what happened during a Memorial Day phone bank event.

Dear Editor,

What would you expect a candidate for public office to be doing on Memorial Day afternoon? Would you expect them to storm into their opponent’s campaign office to confront and intimidate student volunteers? That is what David LaRock did this Memorial Day afternoon. At around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 27, he flung open the doors of Delegate Joe May’s campaign office in Purcellville and began to confront student volunteers who were phone banking for Joe.

Being one of these students I can say Mr. LaRock’s visit was extremely inappropriate. Mr. LaRock clearly considers his case too weak to argue in the public sphere so has taken to personal intimidation instead. This kind of behavior absolutely cannot stand. Mr. LaRock does not possess the character required to represent anyone. He has lied to the voters about his arrest, lied about Joe May’s record and now would rather confront volunteers for Delegate Joe May than take a positive message to the district.

Dear Editor,

Being that it is Memorial Day, one would think Mr. LaRock would spend his time honoring those who have served our nation, or at a minimum, respectfully talking to voters. Instead, he decided to visit the Joe May for Delegate Headquarters uninvited and unannounced to intimidate the Patrick Henry volunteers. His reasoning—he doesn’t like the students’ opinions of him.

Mr. LaRock’s decision to storm into our office made it clear that his only reaction to criticism is to confront and intimidate the person who has criticized him. If Mr. LaRock can’t handle reading a college student’s opinion of him in a local newspaper, how will he be able to handle another delegate criticizing him in Richmond? I would like to say I am surprised by his inappropriate actions today, however, Mr. LaRock’s lack of patience and aggressive attitude has resulted in more than a few run-ins with the law in the recent past.
