Sons and Children of the American Revolution hold joint Patriot Grave Marking

Loudoun County Patriot William Ellzey was honored in a joint ceremony at the Historic Ellzey Family Cemetery south of Leesburg

William Ellzey was an important citizen of Loudoun County in the debates leading up to Revolution and he provided supplies to troops during the Revolution. He was one of several men involved in debates on what Virginia, particularly Loudoun County, should do in response to Britain's Intolerable Acts, one of which was to close the port of Boston. By June 1774 leading citizens of Loudoun County drafted and signed "The Loudoun Resolves" a document declaring that Loudoun County Stood in solidarity with other Virginia Counties in protest to the Intolerable Acts and the taxes they imposed without representation. William Ellzey was assigned to be a member of a Committee of Correspondence responsible for keeping in touch with other Counties as the debate against Britain heated up. The Loudoun Resolves were one of a few Virginia County Resolves declaring citizens would "Sacrifice their lives and fortunes" in resisting military action by Britain.

The Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter VA SAR and the Reverend John Marks Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) jointly sponsored the program held at the Ellzey family cemetery 8 miles south of Old Town Leesburg off of Evergreen Mills Road. In the summer of 2024 the team cleaned the tombstones of William Ellzey and his wife Alice (Blackburn) Ellzey, jointly installed Patriot markers for both organizations on August 15, 2025, and then sponsored the ceremony on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Nineteen organizations participated by presenting wreaths honoring patriot Ellzey.

An impressive array of special organizations brought greetings and presented wreaths. They included: President of Virginia SAR, Dr. Michael Weyler and his first Vice President Darrin Schmidt; Senior National Honorary Vice president C.A.R, Holly Lynn M. Schmidt; Brigade Inspector, George Washington’s Army at Valley Forge, Cynthia Swain Strassberg; Organizing Secretary Virginia C.A.R, MacPhearson Strassberg; and Virginia President German Society SAR, David Cook.
