Student Brought Knife To Elementary School In Leesburg: Police

A student brought a knife to Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg on Monday, authorities said.

LEESBURG, VA — A child brought a knife to Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg on Monday morning, the town's police department said in a news release.

No injuries were reported, authorities said. Investigators have not publicly identified the student or noted why they decided to bring the weapon to school.

The Leesburg Police Department has not announced any criminal charges for the child.

On Monday morning, school staff members received a tip that a Catoctin Elementary student may have carried a knife onto their school bus on Monday morning. Administrators searched the student when they arrived at school and found a knife in the student's belongings.

"We would like to thank those who came forward today to express their concerns to school staff," the Leesburg Police Department said in a news release. "We encourage students and their families to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement, to school administration, or to a trusted adult."

The knife at Catoctin Elementary School was the fourth weapon brought to a Leesburg school in the past week. On Nov. 14, a student brought a flare gun and a BB gun to Smart's Mill Middle School.

A pair of middle school students face criminal charges for possessing the flare gun on school property. During their investigation, authorities seized another item, an electronic candle lighter, from a Smart's Mill student on Wednesday.

Police officials said the candle lighter could be used as a stun weapon.

"Out of an abundance of caution, community members may see an additional police presence in the area of schools within the Town of Leesburg during school hours," the police department said last week.
