Traffic Safety Blitz Comes To Leesburg As Students Return To School
The Leesburg Police Department said it is rolling out a traffic enforcement campaign to coincide with the start of the new school year.
LEESBURG, VA — Schools are back in session on Thursday, and the Leesburg Police Department is starting its annual "Traffic Safety Blitz" to mark the occasion. The campaign will begin later this week, officials said.
Authorities said the annual campaign intends to limit the amount of crashes around area schools, especially during the start of the school year.
In a news release, the police department said it will place electronic message boards throughout the town to encourage safe driving. Authorities noted that the messages will urge drivers to watch for children as they walk to and from school each day.

"Specific emphasis will be placed on speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, stop light & stop sign violations, seat belt & child safety seat usage, as well as pedestrian violations," the Leesburg Police Department said in a news release. "Pedestrian and motorist safety is paramount to the Leesburg Police Department and can only be attained with the cooperation of community members."

The police department noted that traffic enforcement would continue throughout the school year. Officials said officers would focus their efforts in school zone areas based on a statistical analysis with the intention to reduce property damage and crashes causing injury.
