VIRGINIA — A food company is recalling hummus it made sold under the Wegmans supermarket brand due to an undeclared ingredient that could pose an allergy risk, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The hummus topped with harissa made by Summer Fresh Salads Inc. in Canada might contain sesame, although the label does not list the seed as an ingredient. The Wegmans brand hummus was sold between Jan. 29 and Feb. 2 in Virginia and seven other East Coast states and the District of Columbia.

People who have allergies to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products, the FDA recall notice said.

The sesame ingredient was left off the products due to a "labelling error," according to the FDA. No illnesses linked to the spread had been reported as of Friday.

Sesame is now the ninth most common food allergen in the U.S., which prompted the FDA in 2023 to institute a new rule requiring it to be listed on ingredients labels.

The products under recall were sold in 10-1/2 ounce clear tubs with labels marked with lot No. 240239 and lot No. 240309, and with expiration dates of either March 19 or March 26.

Shoppers who bought the products can return them for a refund at Wegmans stores.
