National Night Out, Chand Raat Festival and Comedy Night

What you can look forward to this week in Lorton.

The summer is winding down, and before we know it everyone will be back in school! But until then, here are a few fun events for the week of Aug. 5, 2013. 

1. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, celebrate National Night Out at Lorton Park, which is behind the Lorton Library. The evening is an annual program to introduce communities to law enforcement and local fire officials. Expect face painting, balloon animals, arts and crafts and more. The festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. 

2. Want to celebrate the end of Ramadan in style? You can at the second annual Chand Raat celebration at Lorton Station Town Center on Tues., Aug. 7, 2013.

3. Are you an educator (or know one) and want to know all about founding father George Mason? You're in luck. On Wed., Aug. 8, it's "Teachers Day Out" at Gunston Hall plantation. The all day affair begins at 8:30 p.m. and lasts until 5:30 p.m., and is open to all teachers for re-certification points. The $25 fee covers materials, a continental breakfast and lunch. Registration is required. 

4. Friday, Aug. 9 is comedy night at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton. Howard "G" will perform at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Howard has appeared on Russell Simmons’s HBO Def Comedy Jam, BET’s Comicview and has opened for Jamie Foxx, Dave Chappell and Martin Lawrence.

5. And speaking of the Workhouse Arts Center, don’t miss out on free yoga on the quad on Saturday, Aug. 10 . It all begins at 8:00 a.m.
