Assistance League of Northern Virginia Action Week for Literacy
Build A Child's Library Event Scheduled at Yorkshire Elementary

Assistance League of Northern Virginia, as part of its participation in the Action! Week program of the National Assistance League, will continue its dedication to literacy by purchasing books for every student at Yorkshire Elementary, located on Old Centreville Road in Manassas. Yorkshire Elementary, one of the schools served by Assistance League of Northern Virginia programs, has approximately 850 Pre-K through Fifth Grade students, each of whom will be provided with a new book to take home. This book donation project, titled Build A Child’s Library, is scheduled for Thursday, February 28, at Yorkshire.
Each student will be able to select from a variety of grade-appropriate books that were selected by the Scholastic Literacy Partnership Program, with input from Yorkshire reading specialists regarding the reading skills and interests of students in each grade. Every book will have a bookplate sticker identifying ALNV/Action! Week as the source of the book and will be imprinted with a stamped notation: This Book Belongs To.” As each student selects a book, ALNV volunteers will be available to write the student’s name in the appropriate place.
Funding for this project came from several sources. A special fund established in memory of a long time ALNV member who had a special interest in books; a grant for this literacy effort from residents of Heritage Hunt, in Gainesville, Va.; and donations made to a member who asked for contributions for this project in lieu of birthday gifts. Through careful management of this project the funding will also provide ‘seed money’ to continue important Assistance League of Northern Virginia reading and literacy projects. Additionally extra books purchased for this project will be donated in the future.
