Mental Health Day is Oct. 10. Observing the day raises awareness of mental health and encourages people to around the world mobilize to support those with mental health issues such as depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, phobias, Obsessive-compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder and PTSD.

Understanding mental health has become a hot topic in recent years which means the stigma associated with mental health issues is waning. Mental health is beginning to get the recognition needed to help people with mental health issues.

Mental health is often misunderstood since it is hard to define and involves emotional, social and psychological well-being. People who are susceptible to mental health issues include people who have suffered trauma, people with high stress levels, people with family history and people with few healthy relationships.

People with positive mental health handle stress better, reach their full potential and maintain stable productivity.

Ways to observe Mental Health Day could be talking with family and friends about mental health, participating in events such as walk-a-thons or marathons to raise awareness about mental health and attending seminars. Mental Health Day is also a time when people can reach out to others who have mental health issues.

According to the Pan American Health Organization, Mental Health Day got its start in 1992 when the World Federation for Mental Health first observed the day.
