Avoid Georgetown Pike/I-495 Interchange This Weekend Due To Lane Shift
VDOT crews plan to shift traffic to the new northern portion of the Georgetown Pike Bridge Aug. 23-26 for the ongoing 495 NEXT project.

MCLEAN, VA — As part of the ongoing 495Next project, Virginia Department of Transportation work crews plan to shift traffic to the new northern portion of the Georgetown Pike Bridge starting Friday. This will allow crews to begin work on the southern portion of the bridge.
During the shift, motorists can expect reduced lanes on the Capital Beltway and ramp closures with detours in place.
The move is expected to have a major impact on traffic at Georgetown Pike/I-495 Interchange. VDOT is advising motorists to avoid the interchange on Friday, Aug. 23 through Monday, Aug. 26.

"Switching traffic to the new section of the Georgetown Pike Bridge over a one-weekend period shortens the duration of impacts to local traffic," VDOT said, on the 495 NEXT website. "The extended work hours over the weekend will enable crews needed time to build up pavement transition areas, where there is an elevation difference ranging from three to six feet."
