Delays Possible As Construction On GW Parkway Rehab Project Ramps Up

Construction will begin Monday between the Route 123 interchange and I-495 as part of the George Washington Parkway improvement project.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA – Drivers will see more construction starting Monday on the George Washington Memorial Parkway between the Route 123 interchange and Interstate 495 as part of the National Park Service’s planned upgrade of the northern section of the parkway.

Crews will temporarily widen the road along this section of the parkway, using the median along the northbound travel lanes. The temporary widening will maintain a three-lane configuration during construction, allowing the contractor greater access to the roadway and reducing the time needed to complete the project, according to the NPS.

Starting on Sept. 26, northbound lane closures on the parkway may occur between 7 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Southbound lanes closures may occur between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. At least one lane of traffic in each direction will always be open.

The construction may cause delays, and drivers should proceed with caution in work zones, the NPS said.

The rehabilitation of the northern section of the parkway was announced by the U.S. Department of the Interior last December. In partnership with the NPS, the Federal Highway Administration awarded a $161 million contract to rehabilitate this section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in July. The NPS expects to complete the project in late 2025.

The project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act, is designed to improve safety and water drainage while retaining the beauty of the parkway, including opening scenic views of Washington, D.C.

As part of the project, the NPS will remove some trees and plants, but they will be replaced when the project is completed.

Construction crews also plan to begin work on the Pimmit Run and Glebe Road bridges between Route 123 and Spout Run. Bridge work will occur beneath the parkway surface and will require some lane closures.

Drivers can view construction updates on the project webpage or opt-in to receive email updates about traffic impacts, meeting notices and project milestones by emailing gwmp_superintendent@nps.gov.
