Extension Of Cirque Du Soleil In Tysons Considered By Zoning Board

On Wednesday, Fairfax County officials considered whether to let Cirque Du Soleil continue performing on a vacant property in Tysons.

TYSONS, VA — Cirque du Soleil fans in Northern Virginia have a reason to celebrate. The popular international circus will be performing in Tysons for another five years.

On Wednesday, the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals approved an amended special event permit to allow Cirque du Soleil to extend its annual performances, which take place July 1-Oct. 31, through 2030 at Lerner Town Square.

The county first approved a special permit in June 2016 to allow a temporary circus to use the 26.06-acre property on Galleria Drive north of Chain Bridge Road and between International Drive and Tysons Boulevard. The venue is located within walking distance of Tysons Galleria, Tysons Corner Center, the Tysons Corner Metro Station and parking garages in nearby office buildings.

Under that first permit, the circus was allowed to perform before 2,606 patrons on the vacant property annually from June-September until 2020.

In March 2018, the county approved a modified permit to allow performances from April 13-June 17, 2018, and 70 continuous days from April-September in 2020. The zoning board also allowed for a modification of the parking and land area and a change in permittee.

“The arrangement has proved beneficial to both Cirque and Tysons, and we just want to continue it for another five years,” said Meredith P. Hartley of Reed Smith LLP,, who represented the applicant at Wednesday’s hearing. “We're not asking for any other changes, except for the five years and obviously some updated development conditions.”

Without any additional changes to the permit, the board approved the application on a 5-0 vote.
