FFX Police End Cooper Middle Drug Investigation

Fairfax County police said they have concluded their investigation at Cooper Middle School with the arrest of two 13-year-old students at the school for possesion of marijuana on May 2.

The charges against the two students are  misdemeanors said Officer Bud Walker, a spokesman for the Fairfax police. All juvenile and adult criminal cases are handled by the Commonwealth Attorney’s office, however the court will be Juvenile and Domestic Relations.

Fairfax County school officials refused to say if any students had been expelled as part of the investigation citing student confidentiality.

UPDATE, May 12: "A drug bust at McLean's Cooper Middle is sending shock waves through the community," begins a story  by WUSA-TV reporter and McLean resident Peggy Fox.

Her story, confirmed by Fairfax County police,  said two 13-year-old boys were charged with possession of marijuana on school property. The charge is a misdemeanor, but Officer Bud Walker, of the police department, says the investigation is continuing, and there could be more charges, according to the WUSA story.

School officials say approximately 25 students have been interviewed as part of a school investigation, and a number of students are facing disciplinary action as a result, according to the WUSA story.

The drug bust at Cooper happened on May 2.  It was Cooper's principal who informed parents of 6th graders who will be attending the school next year, Fox said in her story.

Fox included this advice from Officer Walker:  Parents should begin talking to their children about drugs in the fifth grade.  Explain the terms, the type of drugs and what to expect will help demystify illegal drugs, Walker says. 

Walker says parents who suspect drug use are often reluctant to search their child's bedroom. "They need to search it.   It's your house.  It's your child's future," said Walker.

Original story May 12: Two 13-year-old students at Cooper Middle School have been arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, according to Fairfax County police.

Fairfax County schools spokesman Paul Regnier, said the schools  do not comment on student disciplinary issues.

James Fenimore Cooper Middle School,  located on Balls Hill Road, and established in 1962, serves students from some of the best addresses in McLean. The school has an enrollment of 842 and serves grades 7 and 8.
