McDaniel College Dedicates Golf Center in Memory of Alumnus Edgar Coffman of McLean

Bequest from Coffman family creates golf center for McDaniel College golf teams. Edgar Coffman was an avid golfer and McLean resident.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- A golf teaching center was dedicated Tuesday at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland in memory of the late Edgar Coffman, a longtime McLean resident.

The bequest of more than $100,000 for the Golf Teaching Center was made by the Coffman family in memory of Edgar Coffman, who was an avid golfer and longtime resident of Fairfax County.

Friends, family and members of the college community gathered Tuesday afternoon at the McDaniel's Golf Clubhouse for the dedication ceremony for the Golf Teaching Center in memory of Coffman, a 1953 alumnus of McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College. The center will get use from students at the college who play for the men's and women's golf teams. The Center, open year-round, includes an indoor driving range and indoor putting green.

An active McDaniel alumnus, Edgar served on his class reunion committee and helped to recruit prospective students to the college. He also donated to the college’s Green and Gold Golf fund and the Fund for McDaniel.

Speakers at Tuesday's ceremony included Scott Moyer, head coach of McDaniel’s men’s golf team and Mike Diehl, head coach of McDaniel’s women’s golf team. Joan Coffman, a 1954 McDaniel College alumna and wife of the late Edgar Coffman, and members of the men’s and women’s golf teams were also in attendance.

The Golf Teaching Center is only available to members of McDaniel’s men’s and women’s golf teams to allow them the ability to practice year-round. McDaniel is the only college with its own golf course and golf teaching center in the Centennial Conference. McDaniel, the University of Maryland and the United States Naval Academy are the only higher education institutions in Maryland with their own golf courses.
