McLean Students & Teachers Invited to Enter VFW National Scholarship & Teacher Award Programs.

VFW Post 8241 in McLean opens 2025-26 national contests honoring student voices and outstanding educators.

McLean, VA — Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8241 is calling on students and teachers across Fairfax County to share their patriotism and civic pride through the 2025-2026 Patriot’s Pen, Voice of Democracy, and Smart/Maher Citizenship Education Teacher Award programs.

These annual VFW competitions spotlight the next generation of engaged citizens and the educators who inspire them. Post 8241 Commander and program volunteers hope to see robust participation from area schools, emphasizing that “these programs aren’t just about prizes—they’re about reflection, leadership, and gratitude for the freedoms we share.”

Patriot’s Pen – Middle School Essay Contest

Open to students in grades 6–8, Patriot’s Pen invites a 300–400-word essay on this year’s theme, “How are you showing patriotism and support for our country?” Essays are judged on originality, clarity, and connection to the theme. Local winners advance through district and state levels for a shot at the $5,000 national first-place award.

Voice of Democracy – High School Audio Essay Contest

High-school students (grades 9–12) record and submit a 3–5-minute audio essay along with a written transcript exploring the same theme. The national first-place scholarship is $35,000, with additional scholarships awarded at each level of competition. Created in 1947, Voice of Democracy remains one of the nation’s premier patriotic scholarship programs.

Smart/Maher VFW Teacher of the Year Award

Educators in grades K-12 who model good citizenship, innovation, and passion in teaching can be nominated by colleagues, parents, or students. National honorees receive $1,000 for professional development, $1,000 for their school, a commemorative plaque, and an all-expenses-paid trip to the VFW National Convention. Nomination packets include a brief résumé and supporting documentation demonstrating the teacher’s impact in promoting civic responsibility.

How to Apply or Nominate

All entries must reach VFW Post 8241 by October 31, 2025.

“Every essay, recording, and nomination tells a story about service and gratitude,” said Jim Chastain, the post junior vice commander. “We want our community’s voices and teachers to be heard at the national level.”
