Fairfax County Supervisor Linda Smyth was the first to drive over the bridge just after the ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning at the base of the bridge.
“It has been a major project for the neighborhoods,” said Smyth, who represents the county's Providence District.

The $2 million project started in August and opened Friday morning, said Jeff Wagner, spokesman for Fluor-Lane, LLC, the construction company that built the bridge. Steven Titunik, a spokesman or Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said the project could have taken two years.
Del. Mark L. Keam (D-35th District) said the speedy completion of the project makes him happy about other projects going on in the commonwealth. He said he hopes to see other projects follow suit and get completed in record time.

The Idylwood Road bridge was replaced as part of the HOT lanes project. Fluor-Lane and its partner VDOT is replacing all the bridges over the Capital Beltway as part of the HOT lane project. HOT lanes are high-speed toll lanes that are under construction down the center of the Beltway from Springfield to the American Legion Bridge which carries the Beltway across the Potomac River.
The Lewinsville Road bridge in McLean has also been replaced and is ahead of scheduled.
“Enough people in these communities were willing to make the six-month sacrifice,” Keam said. “And six-months later it’s done.”
Vienna Patch will have a full story about the reopening tomorrow.
This story has been corrected to reflect the total cost of the bridge as $2 million.
