Potomac River: Woman Rescued, Man Missing in Separate Incidents

Young woman was helped by a kayaker Tuesday night near the American Legion Memorial Bridge and taken to shore. Search is on for missing man.

McLEAN, VA -- A 20-year old woman was rescued from the Potomac River after falling in Tuesday evening just north of Great Falls, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue.

The woman was swept away in the river and located just north of the American Legion Memorial Bridge, according to Pete Piringer, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue.

A kayer helped the woman and took her to the Virginia shoreline, where she was met by U.S. Park Police., Piringer said. In addition to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue boats, a U.S. Park Police helicopter was also used to help in the search and rescue effort.

Also Tuesday night, an adult male dove into the water near Rocky Island at about 7 p.m. and those who were searching for the woman began searching for the man; their efforts were cut short due to darkness and the search has resumed Wednesday.
