MCLEAN, VA — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

This submission comes from Andrea Watt, who nominated Lawson of McLean, who is a multi-sport athlete and has maintained straight As while helping children in the D.C. area.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

Lawson is a multi-sport, scholar athlete who maintained straight A's while taking part in 2 club sports (soccer, ice hockey) and 3 school sports (soccer, basketball and lacrosse). Even more important than his scores in the classroom and on the field is that he invests time to make sure others less fortunate can take part in team sports.

When he was in 6th grade, he was upset to learn that children in his community were unable to take part in the sports he loved because they lacked the proper equipment, which is expensive to buy. He founded Lawson's Locker, which collects and donates new and used sports equipment, cleats, sneakers and uniforms to help children residing in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

Through monthly community drives and collaboration with community partners, Lawson has donated more than $7,000 in sports equipment to kids in need (including more than 300 sports cleats) — and he is only 14! His ability to be a good teammate — both on and off the field — makes him worthy of this award.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

Not only is he a great teammate on the field, he's even better off the field in his community and in the classroom.

Keep up the great work, Lawson!
