Power Restored to Thousands Saturday in Great Falls Area

High winds could be the culprit Saturday; the area was under a Wind Advisory until 5 p.m.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- Thousands of homes were without power in the Great Falls area Saturday afternoon, according to Dominion Power. The power company said the outages were under investigation. It's possible high winds could have downed lines. The Northern Virginia region was under a Wind Advisory, with possible gusts reaching 50 MPH, according to the National Weather Service.

The Dominion Power outage map below shows a large area of homes that were without power in the Great Falls area, from near the Potomac River going across Route 7. In the area shaded in red, there were 4,073 homes without power; in the area shaded in green, there were 199 homes without power; in the area shaded in blue, there were 34 homes without power. Power was estimated to be back on by 2-7 p.m. for the area shaded in red; 4-9 p.m. for the green shaded area and by 5 p.m. for the area shaded in blue.

In all, 5,513 homes were without power in Northern Virginia Saturday, possibly due to trees downing power lines due to the high winds. Other areas without power included neighborhoods in Annandale, Arlington and Falls Church.
