Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Mount Vernon Area: Driver Faces Charges, Police Say
Police say the driver faces a charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian in Dec. 1 crash; the pedestrian died the next day.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- An Alexandria area man is facing a charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian after the car he was driving struck a pedestrian Dec. 1. on Frye Road (see map below) in the Mount Vernon area. The pedestrian died the next day.
Crash Reconstruction detectives placed charges in the fatal crash that occurred in the area of Richmond Highway and Frye Road. On Monday, the lead detective obtained a magistrate summons charging the driver, Don K. Wong, of Alexandria, with failing to yield to a pedestrian. The summons was served Tuesday; Wong was not taken into custody.
According to a listing of traffic infractions on the Fairfax County Web site, the fine is $97.

On Dec. 1, Wong, 52, was driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz ES500 traveling southbound on Richmond Highway. Police say he made a turn onto westbound Frye Road. The pedestrian, David D. Baines, 57, of the Alexandria area, was crossing Frye Road near the crosswalk and was struck by the car, according to police. Baines was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Wong remained on the scene and Crash Reconstruction detectives assumed the investigation. On Friday, Dec. 2, just before 1 a.m., Baines succumbed to his injuries. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors to the crash, police said.
