Mount Vernon Offers Free Admission on Presidents Day

The Mount Vernon Estate will offer guests free admission on the national observance of George Washington’s birthday on Presidents Day Monday.

The estate will host a wreathlaying ceremony at Washington's Tomb at 10 a.m., followed by patriotic music and military performances on the Bowling Green. “General Washington” will be on the grounds to greet visitors and receive birthday wishes all day. Additionally, Mount Vernon will introduce a new character program to George Washington’s birthday celebration this year.

The Estate will kick off George Washington’s 281^st birthday with a weekend-long celebration. Guests can sample George Washington’s favorite breakfast, hoecakes with butter and honey, from 9 a.m. to noon both days. Following the sampler, guests can visit with costumed characters from George Washington’s era. The weekend will also mark the last chance visitors can view George Washington’s Acts of Congress, on display through Monday. The Acts of Congress will be housed at the Fred W. Smith Library for the Study of George Washington, opening in fall 2013.

The Mount Vernon Estate is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Regular admission rates: adults, $17; senior citizens, $16; children age 6-11, when accompanied by an adult, $8; and children under age 5 get in free. Admission fees, restaurant and retail proceeds, along with private donations, support the operation and restoration of Mount Vernon.
