Mt Vernon High School Students Take Action for Amputees

For every 75 packs of socks sold, LIMBS will provide one leg to an amputee through partner clinics around the world.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- The International Baccalaureate (IB) Design and Technology class at Mount Vernon High School is hard at work selling socks for the celebrated month of “Socktober.” Socktober is an event promoted by LIMBS International that donates prosthetic limbs to people in need.

As part of the IB curriculum, these students are fulfilling their service requirements and giving back to the community at the same time. For every 75 packs of socks sold, LIMBS will provide one leg to an amputee through partner clinics around the world. There are an estimated 40 million amputees throughout the developing world and only 5 percent of them have access to any type of prosthetic leg system.

The students at Mt. Vernon High School are hoping to change that! The IB teaches students to become internationally minded and empowers them to make a change in the world. You can purchase socks here. The students would like to sell 150 pairs of socks. The deadline to purchase socks is Oct. 31.
