Richmond Highway Final Alignment Shift Wednesday

On Wednesday afternoon, all lanes of Richmond Highway (Route 1) in Fort Belvoir will be shifted onto their final alignment, VDOT says.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- On Wednesday afternoon, all lanes of Richmond Highway (Route 1) in Fort Belvoir will be shifted onto their final alignment, according to the Federal Highway Administration Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

This shift will allow for two lanes in each direction on Richmond Highway. Drivers will travel on the new alignment from Telegraph Road to Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, including a newly constructed portion from Belvoir Road (Fort Belvoir Pence Gate) to Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

Drivers are asked to use caution due to the new traffic pattern, VDOT advised.

The lane shifts are part of the Route 1 Widening Project, which is adding an additional lane in both directions and a 32-foot wide median for a nearly four-mile segment of Route 1 between Telegraph Road and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. The final three lanes of travel in each direction are scheduled to open in early spring 2017.
