Surovell, Krizek Submit Petition to Widen Route 1

Nearly 500 signatures were gathered for petition submitted to the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority.

Del. Scott Surovell and Paul Krizek, a candidate for House of Delegates, have submitted nearly 500 petition signatures to the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority in support of the U.S. 1 Widening Project between Napper Road and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

The project would expand the road to six lanes and remove the largest bottleneck on the corridor in Fairfax County, according to a news release from the two.

It’s clear that the people of Mount Vernon and Lee support this project and need this road widening to be prioritized to improve their quality of life,” Surovell said in the release. “We received hundreds of comments from residents and commuters who described how this congestions keeps them on the road and takes countless hours away from their family. Furthermore, this project will also lay the groundwork for a substantial section recommended for significant transit improvements in the U.S. 1 Multimodal Transit Alternatives Study which was completed in October, 2014. I strongly urge the NVTA to prioritize the widening.”

Krizek went onto say that, “I attended the public hearing regarding this project last week, and I saw over one hundred and thirty people show up and demand solutions for traffic on U.S. 1. This bottleneck is not just an inconvenience for those traveling along the Corridor but affects our quality of life, ability to attract new businesses and the ability for our emergency personnel to do their jobs. I sincerely hope that the NVTA will prioritize funding for the widening of U.S. 1.”

Surovell is currently serving his third term in the House of Delegates and announced his candidacy for the 36th District of the Virginia Senate in January. Paul Krizek is running to represent the 44th District of the Virginia House of Delegates, the seat currently held by Surovell.
