Recent and upcoming projects also include a large science and engineering expansion and major roof and HVAC work at the Ferguson Center.
   

• Safety upgrades coming to busy Newport News intersection after crashes (wtkr.com) — Construction is set to begin in early 2026 to overhaul the dangerous Warwick Boulevard and Oriana Road intersection in Newport News’ Denbigh area, adding a median and long-needed pedestrian pushbuttons. City officials say traffic data supports the nearly $1 million VDOT-funded project, which should take about six months and aims to better protect drivers, cyclists, and walkers.
   

• Violent crime drops across Virginia as Hampton Roads leads in police shootings, according to new VSP report (13newsnow.com) — Newport News is part of a Hampton Roads cluster that saw 14 of Virginia’s roughly 45 officer-involved shootings in 2024, nearly a third of the statewide total. The new Virginia State Police report also shows violent crime and homicides dropping overall, even as hate crimes and assaults on officers remain high.
