I have lived in Oakton for 25 years and was lucky to purchase a home at that time when they were more affordable. However, it is now nearly impossible for young people to find affordable housing. Fairfax County’s future depends on a diversified high-tech and knowledge economy, but if talented employees can’t afford to live here, then they’ll go to other regions of the country.

That’s why I support more homes for Oakton, which will be made possible by the Comprehensive Plan amendments before the Planning Commission on Feb 26th and the proposed mixed-use development for the old AT&T office site. The plan would offer hundreds of new homes for a range of incomes, making it easier for young adults, families, nurses, teachers, police and firefighters to live in the community where they work.

It would also create the type of community so many of us love - a neighborhood that is walkable and bikeable, with parks and trails, a grocery store, restaurants, and gathering places. The new street grid, traffic lights, and creative designs for intersections will help address area-wide congestion and make it safer to walk and bike to stores, schools, and visit neighbors. It will reduce the amount we have to drive and help reduce our climate pollution.
