Oakton Elementary Opens New Doors

New addition opens to students, faculty to start new year

When Oakton Elementary School opens its doors for the new year today, it'll be opening new doors altogether.

The addition that has been under construction for more than a year will officially open to students and staff today. It will serve as the new main entrance to the school, with the main office having been relocated to that area and the old entrance for students now closed.

A new art room and library is also housed in the addition, and both will be ready to use starting today.

More changes are expected at Oakton Elementary in the next couple weeks, as some classrooms will be moved into the addition over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend to allow for renovations in the older section of the school.

"While the moves are inconvenient, they are a necessary part of the project," wrote Principal Christine Gray in her blog about the renovation on the Oakton Elementary website. "We are looking forward to having the entire project done as we begin the year next fall.

When the construction crews finish their work later this year, the renovations to the 66-year-old school will have cost about $13 million and expand the school from 71,000 to 91,600 square feet.
