2025-26 Winter Forecast: Here's How Snowy And Cold It Will Be In VA

The Old Farmer's Almanac has shared its winter forecast predictions for Virginia, outlining what the state can expect in the coming season.

This winter could be milder and drier in Northern Virginia. At the same time, most of the United States will likely also experience slightly warmer temperatures, according to a new 2025-26 winter forecast from The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The publication released its seasonal outlook this week and calls for the coming season to be "mostly mild — with pockets of wild."

“Don’t lose track of your snow shovels and umbrellas,” Old Farmer's Almanac Editor Carol Connare said in the forecast. “Most areas will experience near-normal to slightly milder temperatures, but from the Appalachians south through the Southeast and Florida, and westward across the Ohio Valley, we’re predicting a colder-than-normal winter.”

The Atlantic Corridor forecast region, which includes the Washington, D.C. area, should see below-normal snowfall this winter, with the snowiest periods in late December, early January and late February. The coldest temperatures will likely be recorded in mid- to late December and early and late January.

Meanwhile, Virginia's Appalachian regions could have a cooler winter than other parts of the state. In the Appalachians, the Old Farmer's Almanac predicts colder than usual temperatures with a split snow story: lighter in the north, heavier in the south.

Since the first edition in 1792, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has used a unique, proprietary method of predicting weather that is still in place today. Forecasts are developed using a combination of solar science, climatology and meteorology.

This year's winter prediction from Old Farmer's Almanac differs from the one released earlier this month by rival publication Farmers' Almanac. According to Farmers' Almanac, Maryland can expect a snow-filled winter this year with frequent storms.

Here are other forecast highlights across the continental U.S.:

  • Temperatures: Near normal to slightly milder across much of the country, except in the Appalachians, Southeast, Florida and the Ohio Valley, where colder-than-average conditions are forecasted.
  • Precipitation: Overall, drier than usual, with extended dry stretches likely. However, Florida, the Intermountain region and the eastern Desert Southwest may see above-average precipitation.
  • Snowfall: Near or below normal for most areas. However, greater amounts of snow are expected in much of the Carolinas, southern Appalachians, eastern Ohio Valley, southern Rockies and eastern Desert Southwest.
