5 Things: Hot Dogs, Pooches With Booze, Vermilion and a Corpse Flower

Some ideas for your day in the Old Town Alexandria area.

Happy Tuesday, Old Towners. What’s happening with you today? I’m headed to Merriweather to see Bob Dylan, Wilco and My Morning Jacket.

Since you're not coming with me, here’s a look at what’s shaking around town and elsewhere:

National Hot Dog Day! — There are at least three great places in Old Town to celebrate: Haute Dogs and Fries located at 610 Montgomery St. has 14 different dogs on its menu, plus a make-your-own selection. If you’re looking for something more simple, $2.75 will get you a basic frank at The Bottom-Dollar Dog, located at 723 Wilkes St.

And of course we cannot forget the legendary Blue and White Carry-Out located at 1024 Wythe St., where you can still get a juicy dog for less than $2.

Five Guys carries hot dogs, too.

A dog walks into a bar — After you’ve enjoyed your hot dog, bring your pooch to Jackson 20 (480 King St.) at 5 p.m. for Doggie Yappy Hour.

Live tunes at Vermilion — The Joe Chiocca Band is performing at Vermilion (1120 King St.) beginning "around" 9:30 p.m.  The seasoned group is known for its great mix of tunes, from blues to bluegrass.

The corpse flower is in bloom — Enjoy its stinky odor, which officials with the U.S. Botanic Garden have compared to smelling like “rotting flesh." To catch a glimpse and a whiff of the Titan Arum, visit today while it’s still in bloom. The U.S. Botanic Garden is located at 100 Maryland Ave., SW. The closest Metro stop is Federal Center SW.

Sit in on a discussion between area chefs — Learn about their kitchen training, inspiration and how they became part of the local food scene. The group features Kyle Bailey of Neighborhood Restaurant Group; Bertrand Chemel of 2941 Restaurant; Brian McBride of Marcel's; Andrew Markert of Beuchert’s Saloon; Todd Gray of Equinox; and Geoff Tracy of Chef Geoff’s; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. $45. Some proceeds from ticket sales benefit D.C. Central Kitchen and Nourish Now. The event is at the Howard Theatre, 620 T St., NW.
