63 Pets Adopted Saturday at 'Clear the Shelters' Event in Alexandria

Annual event nationwide aims to boost adoptions, help animals find forever homes.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria saw 63 animals find forever homes on Saturday during a "Clear the Shelters" event. All adoption fees were waived Saturday.

The shelter posted photos Saturday of dogs, cats, rabbits that were adopted and their happy new owners. That brings the total adoptions for July at 159 for the shelter.

Last year, nearly 20,000 pets found their forever homes, when some 400 animal shelters across the country partnered with sponsors NBC-owned TV stations and the Telemundo Station Group.

In addition to dogs and cats, the shelter usually has for adoption birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters and even a chinchilla.
