Alexandria Expands Capital Bikeshare To West End Neighborhoods

ALEXANDRIA, VA — There's some good news for folks who take advantage of Alexandria's Capital Bikeshare Program. According to city officials, the city will expand the program to the West End several years ahead of schedule, starting in early 2021.

The city plans to purchase seven previously deployed stations in good condition, which will accelerate the system expansion by two to five years, officials said.

The interim stations, which are anticipated to be installed in January and February, will be replaced with new equipment once grant funding becomes available.

City staff is finalizing locations for stations and coordinating an installation schedule, officials said.

The general locations recommended in Alexandria’s Transportation Master Plan are being used as a starting point for the new locations and are being considered in coordination with the bikeshare operator and adjacent property owners.

Members of the traffic and parking board supported these locations during discussion at their meeting on Oct. 26.
