Updated: Alexandria Police Investigate Homicide on Wythe Street

Victim identified as Bob Cory McNeely of Alexandria.

3:45 p.m. update — Alexandria Police identified the victim of the suspicious death as Alexandria resident Bob Cory McNeely. 

An autopsy determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound. 

McNeely's death is the first homicide for Alexandria in 2011. There were two homicides in 2010.

Alexandria Police are investigating a suspicious death in the 1200 block of Wythe St.

The area is near Braddock Road Metro and the U.S. Post Office on Wythe St.

Around 10:10 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to a report of shots fired.  They found one male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. 

The victim, a 40 year old black male, was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The identity of the victim is being withheld until next of kin is notified.

The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.
