Wanamaker served as Buffalo’s director of the Office of Strategic Planning until 2008. That department receives federal funds for economic development projects.

Wanamaker was immediately placed on administrative leave while the City of Alexandria conducts a review of the circumstances. Alexandria Internal Audit will review Wanamaker’s financial transactions within city government.

It's estimated he ran up about $30,000 in improper charges from 2004 to 2008, according to the Associated Press.

He faces up to 10 years in prison when he's sentenced in March.

Wanamaker was hired by the City of Alexandria in August 2010. Prior to his hiring, the city contracted Waters Consulting to conduct a background investigation of Wanamaker, which did not report any criminal investigations or activity. Wanamaker did not have access to a City of Alexandria credit card and did not travel for work.
