Local Motion Studio Opens With a Mission to Share the Joy of Dance

New Dove St. studio also offers childcare and classes for children as well as adults.

Sara Lavan is a dancer who seeks to share the joy of dance with all ages.

She recently opened Local Motion, a studio offering yoga, pilates and dance for children and adults seeking to stretch their bodies and their minds.

“It’s not just a fitness studio,” she said, speaking from Local Motion’s space on the outskirts of Old Town off of Duke St. behind the Post Office. “I want people to find joy in movement.”

Lavan grew up in New York City where she was a dancer and taught creative movement to kids. Her husband’s job recently brought them to the Washington, D.C., area and Lavan's parents live in Baltimore.

The studio offers classes for ages two to seven as well as for adults. There’s also childcare available for ages six months through eight years for a parent or caregiver who’s looking for a workout while on kid duty.

Lavan was a stay at home mom for about six and a half years before opening Local Motion, her first foray into being a small business owner.

She worked with the Women’s Business Center in Springfield, Va., and with the Alexandria Small Business Development Center for help in getting her business started.

Class schedule and other information can be found at www.localmotionstudio.com. For example, the studio, located at 2377 Dove St., is hosting an upcoming kids workshop on the Monday Presidents' Day holiday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children in grades 1-3.
