This week we look at how our kids can enjoy the region's many activities without getting overloaded or overwhelmed

I love this area for its riches in places to go and things to do with kids. There are so many one-time events, it seems like there's always something to do. But when it comes to signing kids up for a class, consider how every family member can get the most out of it. Getting kids exposed to team sports can be great for one kid, but may not be right for another. And don't forget - a parent or caregiver is very likely going to have to provide transportation.

Juice Box Diaries Columnist Jen Desautels offers her insight on children's activities:

We live in a rich and culturally diverse community with resources in our  city, as well as just a few minutes up the road in D.C.

With our fabulous location, comes that nagging need to take advantage of all the offerings available for children. It is important to expose children to activities:

  • Teach them about team sports by enrolling them in a soccer class.
  • Introduce them to a new language.
  • Have them try out science classes, art classes, and music classes.
  • Even consider letting them learn about a new instrument.

Two or three activities a week seems about right for young children. But keep this very important fact in mind -  Your kids won't be taking the bus to these activities. You will be driving them or participating in a carpool. So consider how many activities YOU want to participate in as you build your children's schedule. Don't overdo it. Don't enroll them in a class because you feel you have to. Do it because they will enjoy it and do it because it works for your schedule and your life. Everyone's happiness is important here.
