Did you start with a "starter pet" like a hermit crab or a goldfish to see if your child was on his or her way to be ready to care for a dog?
Parents (and kids) are busy people. Is a child ready to take care of a dog when he or she is old enough to walk it around the block? Buy it food? Clean up after it?
