Most of Alexandria's Public Schools Receive Full Accreditation

T.C. Williams High School and Jefferson-Houston School still face minor hurdles.

Seventeen of the City of Alexandria’s 19 public schools are now considered fully accredited, according to a Thursday announcement by the Virginia Department of Education.

T.C. Williams High School and Jefferson-Houston School, which serves preschool through 8th grade, did not meet all required benchmarks.

T.C. Williams met all requirements except for the graduation completion rate. The Graduation Completion Index score for T.C. was 83, but 85 is required to meet the benchmark allowing T.C. to be “provisionally accredited.”

Jefferson-Houston received accreditation with warning status in the categories of English, history and science.

“We are thrilled with the results and recognize the exceptional learning environments in our schools. We will continue our focus on improving achievement for all students,” said School Superintendent Morton Sherman. “I expect that the ongoing transformation efforts at T.C. and the new leadership and programs at Jefferson-Houston will move those schools towards full accreditation.”

T.C. experienced historically high SOL scores last year, with a 94 percent passing rate in English and an 83 percent passing rate in mathematics.

New standards impacted high school accreditation across the commonwealth resulting in fewer high schools earning full accreditation, according to a statement from Alexandria City Public Schools.
